So, The Indian Engineering Services (IES) exam is a competitive exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the recruitment of engineers in various government departments and organizations.

The IES exam is also known as the Engineering Services Examination (ESE). The IES exam is one of the most prestigious and challenging exams in India, as it offers a lucrative and respected career in the public sector.

It is the three-stage competitive examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to recruit engineers for the Government of India. The stages are:

First is the Preliminary Examination, which is a written examination consisting of two papers; Paper I is General Studies and Engineering Aptitude (100 questions, 200 marks), and Paper II is Engineering Discipline (100 questions, 200 marks).

Second is the Main Examination, which is a written examination consisting of seven papers; Paper I is General Studies I (150 questions, 300 marks), Paper II is General Studies II (150 questions, 300 marks),

Paper III is Engineering Mathematics (120 questions, 240 marks), Paper IV is Electrical Engineering (120 questions, 240 marks), Paper V is Mechanical Engineering (120 questions, 240 marks),

Paper VI is Civil Engineering (120 questions, 240 marks), and Paper VII is Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering (120 questions, 240 marks).

Third is an Interview, which is a Personality Test to assess the candidates’ suitability for the service.

Let us discuss below the eligibility criteria for the IES exam:

 If you are a candidate, you must be between 21 and 30 years of age as on January 1 of the year of the exam. There are relaxations in the upper age limit for certain categories of candidates, such as SC/ST, OBC, ex-servicemen, persons with disabilities, etc.

You must be Indian citizens or subjects of Nepal, Bhutan, or Tibet who came to India before January 1, 1962. They can also be persons of Indian origin who have migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries, Vietnam, or Ethiopia with the intention of permanently settling in India.

You must be physically fit according to the standards prescribed by the UPSC for admission to the engineering services, and the important one is that you must have an engineering degree from a recognized university or institution.

You can also have a master’s degree in science or equivalent in electronics, wireless communication, or radio physics.

You can also have passed sections A and B with a minimum of 60% marks in the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India) or similar examinations of other professional bodies.

The roles and responsibilities of the IES officers vary depending on their engineering branch and the service they are assigned.
